What Causes the Need for Emergency Dental Services?

Many people in Lynn need emergency dental services at some point in their lives. You can suffer dental damage because of an accident, sports injury, a fall, or even just biting into hard foods. Some of the most common culprits leading people to need emergency dental services are hard foods like ice, popcorn kernels, and candies.

Mouth injury often causes cracked, broken or dislodged teeth. These are times when you need emergency dental care in Lynn, Massachusetts. Waiting to receive such medical attention can lead to severe complications. Waiting for urgent treatment can also affect your wallet, costing more in the long run than immediate dental help.  Dental emergencies happen at any time of day, in any place and to any member of your family. Some of these injuries require the immediate attention of your dentist. But others can wait until the next business day. Below are the in-demand dental services we provide:

  • Tooth Extraction
  • Fillings
  • Teeth Cleaning
  • Root Canal Treatment
  • Traditional Dentures
  • Dental Implants
  • Braces/Invisalign
  • Treatment for Tooth and Gum Disease

Emergency Toothache

Toothaches can occur because of tooth decay, trauma to the mouth, or even when food gets stuck in between them. It is important for you not to mess with the tooth too much if it does hurt you. You should rinse your mouth out with water and then attempt to floss the tooth that is irritated to make sure no food is stuck around it.  If you are experiencing a lot of pain, you can take an over-the-counter pain killer or place a compress on your cheek. Do NOT place aspirin on the tooth, as it can burn your gums and cause further complications.

What to Do with an Abscess?

An abscess is a very serious medical condition that should be treated by an emergency dentist as soon as possible. Abscesses are a type of infection that occurs in the space between the tooth and the gum or at the root of the tooth.  Symptoms of an abscessed tooth include fever, pain when chewing, sensitivity to heat or cold, swelling of the gums or jaw and a bitter taste in the mouth along with foul breath. Eventually, the abscess can destroy the root of the tooth and spread to other areas of the body.

A dental abscess is a true dental emergency and should be examined and treated by a Lynn dentist as soon as possible. Untreated tooth infections can pose serious health problems for the entire body.

Lost Filling

Many adults and children have fillings that fall out or are pulled out while they are eating. Losing a filling exposes the damaged area of the tooth and may or may not cause pain. When a filling is lost, it is important to visit an Lynn emergency dentist as soon as possible to replace the filling and prevent further damage to the tooth.

A lost filling does not have to be a problem. Placing a piece of sugarless gum or an over-the-counter dental cement into the cavity will protect the damaged area until you can visit your Lynn, MA urgent dental care provider to have the filling replaced. Do not use sugared gum because this can cause pain in the exposed cavity.

Lynn also is home to Lynn Heritage State Park, the southernmost portion of the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway, and the seaside, National Register-listed Diamond Historic District.
